Nach Vorfall im Weißen Haus – Europa ordnet sich neu: Meloni setzt sich für USA-Europa-Gipfel ein

Meloni called for a swift summit between the US and Europe regarding the events in Washington. She stated that it is necessary to openly discuss how to tackle the significant challenges of today.
Any division benefits those who hope for the downfall of Western civilization, Meloni explained. It remained unclear whether, in her view, Ukraine, which is under attack from Russia, should participate in a summit meeting with the US. The right-wing Prime Minister is seen as one of the most important contacts of the new US government among European leaders. She attended the inauguration of President Trump in January. However, she also stands alongside Ukraine, which is being attacked by Russia.
Ukraine Summit in London with Zelenskyy
Tomorrow, a Ukraine summit is initially set to take place in London, convened by British Prime Minister Starmer. More than a dozen European heads of state and government are invited, along with representatives from Turkey. Chancellor Scholz will represent Germany. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, NATO Secretary-General Rutte, European Commission President von der Leyen, and European Council President Costa are also expected. Starmer aims to inform about his meeting with US President Trump in Washington. The summit is intended to demonstrate Europe’s collective and steadfast support for a peace solution that secures Ukraine’s future sovereignty, as stated from London. In light of recent events, the question is likely to resurface on how Europe can replace the US in providing aid to Ukraine.
EU Special Summit in Brussels
Next Thursday, a special EU summit in Brussels will also address the current situation and further aid for Ukraine. The EU will strengthen its support for Ukraine to enable it to continue combating the aggressor, declared High Representative Kallas. However, reaching an agreement could be difficult as extensive decisions require unanimity in the EU. Hungary’s Prime Minister Orban has repeatedly blocked EU aid for Kyiv.
