According to reports, arms deliveries worth over one billion US dollars are affected. The preparation for these deliveries had already begun. The approval for this was granted by the US Congress under Trump’s predecessor, Biden.

However, the order also halts hundreds of millions of dollars in aid that would have enabled Ukraine to purchase new military equipment directly from American defense contractors, as explained by Deutschlandfunk correspondent Doris Simon. This means that the supplies to Ukraine, which had previously been sent every two weeks, are now on hold.

Suspension as Leverage?

Vance stated on Fox News that Trump’s door is open if Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is willing to negotiate peace. Moreover, it is in Ukraine’s interest to create economic opportunities for the US in the country. This is the best security guarantee, Vance said, „a much better security guarantee than 20,000 troops from any country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years.“ The interview was recorded before it became known that the US is suspending its military aid.

Before that, Vance and Trump had reiterated their claim – as they did during the uproar in the White House – that Zelenskyy does not want peace. President Zelenskyy will „not be around much longer“ if a ceasefire does not occur, Trump said. He himself would „not tolerate Zelenskyy’s stance much longer.“

No Official Reaction from Zelenskyy Yet

Russia praised the decision. Ukraine stated that it hopes to continue cooperating with the US government. No statement from President Zelenskyy was available initially.

Shortly before Trump’s decision was announced, Zelenskyy wrote on the online platform X that he hopes for continued support from the USA. In his evening video address, he said that Russia is keeping the war going because there are no clear security guarantees for Ukraine.
